How to play:
At the vestigial title screen, Use the mouse to select one player, two player, credits, options or quit.
On the options screen, click the menu option you wish to toggle or select. Some options require you to adjust with + and - buttons once they are selected, others toggle simply by clicking them.
Select a one or two player game and then select the game mode.
There are four game modes: Time, Points, Pieces and Fill Board. To choose a game mode, select the game mode with the mouse and press the left mouse button. Then click the + and - buttons with the mouse to change the time limit, the points goal or the number of pieces.
Once the game starts, player one uses the mouse to move the arrow cursor over a column. The left mouse button will drop a red piece. Then it is player two's turn. Player two uses the left and right arrow keys to move the cursor and the space bar will drop a piece.
For a Time game, the object is to score more points than your opponent before the time runs out. Also, there is a "turn timer" displayed beneath the time remaining. You must take your turn before the turn timer runs out. Otherwise, your piece will drop automatically.
For a Points game, the object is to be the first player to reach the points goal.
For a Pieces game, there are a limited number of pieces. The object is to score more points than your oppontent before the number of pieces run out. When either player takes his/her/its turn, the pieces left decreases.
The Fill Board game goes on until there are no more possible moves. The player with the most points wins. This game can take a while!
Try to get four or more of your colored pieces in a row, either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Once you get four or more in a row (either horizontally, diagonally, or vertically) the pieces explode for some reason. All the pieces above those pieces will then fall down. If they create a four or more in a row, they too will explode for some reason. This is called a combo. When pieces explode, you score (heh heh m heh heh heh yeah heh heh m heh). If you score, you get to go again.
Scoring:
4 of your color pieces in a row: 5 points
5 of your color pieces in a row: 10 points
6 " " " " " " " " " ": 15 points
7 " " " " " " " " " ": 20 points
etc.
If you cause a combo which results in the other colored pieces to explode, you get some points for that too!
4 of the other color pieces in a row: 1 point
5 " " " " " " " " " " " : 2 points
6 " " " " " " " " " " " : 3 points
7 " " " " " " " " " " " : 4 points
etc.
To quit the current game, press [esc] to return to the title screen.
I've never played a game *exactly* like this (cough!) so please send feedback/bugs/etc. to connectTHIS@planetidiot.com
Thank you, and have a great day.
UPDATES:
03/19/2001 - FINALLY I added sticky options. That is, you can set the game speed, music volume, etc., and your prefs will stick next time you load the game!
03/18/2001 - Fixed a problem where you could leave the cursor over a filled column during a timed game and let time run out! Now if you try some hooker ass maneuver like that it will just drop randomly somewhere. Also I made this readme an html file. Why it was text before is beyond me. Like I'm old skool or something.
02/21/2001 - OK, I'm being nicer on your memory, maybe this'll speed things up for some of you crazies out there. Also, now you can actually turn the sfx off, where as before you could just pretend.
02/15/2001 - LOTS OF STUFF! Added the DUP intro, final game mode, more tunes (Thanks Steve!), options screen, credits (send me some feedback and you may see your name there too...), easy and hard CPU levels, and SOUND FX!
01/30/2001 - Made "Fill Board" an official game mode.
01/29/2001 - Finally made setting game modes, etc. not so @#!;in' hurtin'.
01/27/2001 - Added niftier title screen
01/25/2001 - Added music by Steve "Fash" Harrison! Un(?)fortunately we lost the sound effect(s) in the process. Blame the experimental sound routines I suppose... should be fixed in a future update of Blitz.
01/11/2001 - Added the Pieces game mode.
01/08/2001 - Added the Points game mode.
01/06/2001 - Added the Time game mode, and the turn timer, as well as some graphical thingy-ma-dingies. Now the game has a point!
12/29/2000 - Added the computer opponent! Special thanks to my dad, Robert Felice, for the C code for the AI.
12/22/2000 - Major code rework (can it be considered 'major' for a game this small?) fixed a crash bug (!!!) and got the go-again-if-you-score thing working.
12/09/2000 - Started? I think?
